Despite a broader industry-wide push toward electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz continues to refine and offer its popular A-Class model, betting on sustained demand for conventional combustion engines and hybrid technology. A recent road test of the high-performance AMG A 45 S 4Matic+ reveals a compelling blend of speed and practicality, showcasing the continued appeal of the compact performance segment. The model’s future within the Mercedes-Benz lineup remains somewhat uncertain amidst platform shifts, but its current popularity ensures its continued presence for the time being.

Despite the automotive industry’s shift towards electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz continues production of its popular A-Class model, a decision driven by strong consumer demand and ongoing sales of combustion engine vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz is rolling out new models on a new platform, with the CLA serving as the first. Typically, the introduction of a new CLA is followed by updates to the A, B, GLA, and GLB models. However, the current automotive landscape is unique, and several of these models may not receive future iterations. The A-Class, despite facing this potential fate, will remain in the lineup due to its continued popularity. While Mercedes-Benz aims to increase EV sales, the majority of its revenue still comes from traditional automobiles, particularly those with internal combustion engines. This reality, coupled with the limited availability of charging infrastructure, supports the continuation of the A-Class.

The A-Class is also available as a plug-in hybrid, considered one of the best in its class, notably for its early adoption of DC fast charging capabilities. The AMG A 45 S remains in the lineup as well, even as the closely related CLA 45 S recently concluded production with a limited edition release.

421 Reasons to be Impressed

The A45 S boasts a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 310 kW (421 horsepower) and 500 Nm of torque. This power allows for a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds with Launch Control, and a top speed of 270 km/h (with the optional AMG Driver’s Package now included as standard). These speeds, combined with the car’s relatively small wheelbase and weight, deliver a thrilling driving experience. The aerodynamic enhancements, including a rear wing, front and rear diffusers, significantly reduce ride height and improve handling.

The vehicle rides on beautifully crafted 19-inch forged AMG wheels, equipped with Pirelli P Zero winter tires that have remarkably withstood the rigors of testing, showing no signs of damage despite months of use. The design of the A45 S allows it to be easily identified, even from a distance, thanks to its distinctive AMG grille, commanding respect on the highway. While not necessarily eliciting deference, other drivers tend to yield.

The 421 horsepower translates to impressive acceleration figures. The A45 S achieves a 60-100 km/h acceleration time comparable to high-performance electric vehicles and sports GT cars, including the AMG GT 63. Specifically, it completes the sprint in 3.04 seconds in Sport+ mode. The combined WLTP fuel consumption is rated at 8 liters per 100 km, while the onboard computer recorded 15.0 l/100 km during testing.

The Pirelli P Zero tires provide excellent grip, and the car’s electronics contribute to stability. The system subtly regulates the driving line without significantly reducing power, allowing drivers to tailor the experience to their preferences and comfort level. While powerslides were discouraged during testing, the car demonstrated its capabilities on narrow mountain roads.

The car excels in maintaining a clean driving line and absorbing imperfections in the road surface, minimizing the need for corrective steering. The braking system, featuring steel discs, is highly effective, offering a practical alternative to carbon-ceramic options. The driving experience is exceptional, enhanced by the adjustable exhaust flap and the engine’s high-revving nature, continuing to deliver power up to 7000 rpm.

The Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4Matic+ is a remarkable sports car, packaged in a practical body style with 370 liters of cargo space and ample cabin room for four passengers. It comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of features, including the MBUX system on a relatively compact central display, a premium steering wheel, and supportive seats. The price tag starts at €95,380. While a significant investment, the A45 S offers a compelling combination of performance and practicality for Mercedes-Benz and AMG enthusiasts.
