The train, part of the ambitious Interoceanic Corridor project, was carrying 250 people – 241 passengers and nine crew members – when the lead locomotive left the tracks, according to the Mexican Navy Secretariat (SEMAR). The train consists of two locomotives and four passenger cars.
The derailment happened on Line Z, which runs between Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. The Mexican government owns the line and initiated the Interoceanic Corridor project in 2023, aiming to revitalize rail transport in southern Mexico. The project is intended to create a trade link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the incident on social media, stating that emergency services are assisting those affected. “We are attentive to the work of the Secretary of the Navy to support users of the Interoceanic Corridor.
