TEHERAN – Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, survived an aerial attack by the United States and Israel that killed his father, sources in Iran confirmed Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
According to two Iranian sources who spoke with Reuters, Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered a potential successor to his father within Iran’s ruling circles.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died Saturday, February 28, 2026, after his office in Tehran was bombed by the U.S. And Israel. The attack too reportedly resulted in the deaths of several Iranian military figures and other influential individuals.
One of the Iranian sources stated that Mojtaba Khamenei was not in the capital city at the time of the attack. “He is still alive… He was not in Tehran when the Supreme Leader was killed,” the source said.
Mojtaba Khamenei is known as a mid-ranking cleric with close ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He is also described as a hardliner and has been a prominent figure among Iranian clerics for years. His close relationships with both the military and political elite in Iran have frequently led to his name being mentioned as a leading candidate to replace his father as Supreme Leader.
The Iranian government announced a 40-day period of mourning following Khamenei’s death on Sunday, March 1, 2026. A senior Israeli official told Reuters that the body of the Iranian leader had been recovered.
The planned funeral for Khamenei, initially scheduled for Wednesday evening local time, was postponed due to security concerns related to the expected large number of mourners. The development underscores the volatile political climate in the region following the attack.
Israel has reportedly vowed to target any potential successors to Khamenei, with Mojtaba Khamenei considered a primary target, according to reports.
