A man in his 30s was hospitalized with stab wounds Saturday morning in Moss, Norway, after what police are now calling an accidental incident involving a stab vest and a knife.
Police responded to a reported stabbing at a private residence in the Østfold region around 11:34 a.m. local time, according to initial reports from the Akuttmedisinsk kommunikasjonssentral (AMK), the country’s emergency medical communication center.
“Emergency services are responding to a private address following a report of a stabbing,” Øst Police District operations leader Atle Vesttorp initially stated.
Upon arrival, authorities determined the incident stemmed from an unusual situation. All four individuals present at the residence were intoxicated, police said.
“We have been in contact with all parties involved. At this time, we are looking at a suspect and a victim,” said Eirik Skjeldrum, a legal advisor with the Øst Police District.
No Arrests Made
While the initial call suggested a criminal act, investigators have shifted their focus. According to police, there is no indication of criminal intent behind the stabbing in Moss.
“This involved testing the effectiveness of a stab vest, and it was a game that unfortunately resulted in stab injuries. A knife was used,” Skjeldrum confirmed to NRK.
The individual who inflicted the injuries is currently considered a suspect but has not been arrested. The parties involved have acknowledged the facts of the incident, and both the stab vest and the knife have been confiscated, according to authorities.
The victim, a man in his 30s, sustained injuries to his back and was transported to Sykehuset Østfold on Kalnes. He was conscious and in stable condition when he arrived at the hospital, Skjeldrum said.
Police have opened a criminal investigation into the incident. The case highlights the dangers of handling weapons, even in seemingly harmless situations.
