New Mexico to Host National Testbed for High-Performance Computing, Strengthens Japan Energy Partnership
New Mexico will become a national hub for cutting-edge technology and energy collaboration, as New Mexico State University (NMSU) partners with Fujitsu to establish a testbed for high-performance and edge computing, alongside a new roadmap for exporting natural gas to Japan.
The initiative, unveiled today, October 20, 2025, will see NMSU and Fujitsu collaborate on developing and testing advanced computing technologies, positioning the state as a leader in this rapidly evolving field. Simultaneously, Governors Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico and Mark Gordon of Wyoming, along with Japanese Ambassador to the United States Izumi Takenaka, announced a joint plan to facilitate the export of Rocky Mountain natural gas to Japan. This collaboration aims to bolster energy security for Japan and create economic opportunities in the Western United States.
The Rocky Mountain Gas Infrastructure Development plan outlines an actionable roadmap for expanding natural gas infrastructure and streamlining export processes. “This is about strengthening our partnerships and ensuring a reliable energy future,” stated Governor Lujan Grisham. The agreement builds upon existing efforts to enhance trade relationships with Japan, a key economic partner for New Mexico, and leverages the state’s growing technology sector – recently highlighted by its designation as a Tech Hub by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Increased access to reliable energy sources is critical for both economic growth and national security.
Officials stated the combined initiatives represent a significant step towards diversifying New Mexico’s economy and solidifying its role in both the technology and energy landscapes. Further details regarding the implementation of the gas infrastructure plan and the specifics of the NMSU-Fujitsu testbed are expected to be released in the coming months, with both projects anticipated to generate substantial investment and job creation.
