In a notable political shift for Kerala, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has gained control of the Neduvathur panchayat in Kottarakkara, marking the first time the party holds a majority in the local body. Celebrations erupted as BJP leaders and supporters commemorated the win, a culmination of sustained gains made since first securing a seat in 2010.The victory comes amid dissolving alliances between the traditionally dominant United Democratic Front (UDF) and Left Democratic Front (LDF) ahead of upcoming state legislative assembly elections.

Kottarakkara, India – The Neduvathur panchayat, now the sole area in the district represented by the lotus symbol, erupted in celebration as party leaders and supporters secured a majority in recent local elections. Jubilant crowds marked the occasion with slogans, the distribution of sweets, and patriotic songs.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) first gained a foothold in the panchayat in 2010, when Vidya won a seat representing the lotus symbol. At that time, the party held only one seat on the local council. By 2015, Vidya was joined by two additional BJP members. In 2020, the BJP’s representation swelled to seven, making it the largest single party in the panchayat. However, a coalition between the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), along with support from independent candidates, prevented the BJP from taking power. This year, the BJP increased its presence to eight members in the 19-member panchayat.

With the state legislative assembly elections approaching, the traditional alliances between the UDF and LDF dissolved, paving the way for the BJP to assume control of the Neduvathur panchayat. Despite not securing an outright majority, party members are celebrating their success in raising the saffron flag over the local government.

Party East District President Raji Prasad and in-charge T.R. Ajithkumar traveled to Neduvathur to congratulate President Vidya and Vice President Krishnakumar. Supporters then organized a procession from the panchayat office to the Thamarassery junction and onward to Killur.

The demonstration was led by local leaders including Alumchery Jayachandran, Mandal President Sreenivasan, cell coordinator Rajagopal, panchayat committee president Santhosh Padmashree, block panchayat member Santhosh Sreesai, Sajikumar, Rajesh, Chalukonam Ajitkumar, and Omanakuttanpillai.
