Flu Epidemic Continues, Straining Healthcare Resources

A surge in influenza cases is putting significant pressure on hospitals, leading to postponed surgeries and heightened infection control measures. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges of respiratory illness during peak season and underscores the importance of preventative measures.

The Bravis hospital in Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands, is experiencing increased demand due to the flu outbreak. As of Tuesday morning, February 23, 2026, the hospital’s emergency department had treated 21 patients with flu-related symptoms – 16 in Bergen op Zoom and 5 in Roosendaal. The majority of these patients required treatment for bone fractures, according to reports.

The influx of patients has prompted some hospitals to delay non-urgent procedures. Visitors experiencing cold symptoms are now required to wear face masks to facilitate limit the spread of infection. This measure aims to protect vulnerable patients and healthcare workers.

Concerns about the flu peak coincided with the start of Carnival celebrations, a period known for large gatherings and increased social interaction. The timing raises concerns about further transmission of the virus.

Amidst the health concerns, a carnavalsbaby, Nomi Kylie van Reusel, was born on Tuesday, February 23, 2026, at the Bravis hospital’s Mother and Child Center in Bergen op Zoom, as reported by Omroep Brabant.

The Bravis hospital previously opened its doors to the public on June 21 and 28 for Bravis Family Days, a special event celebrating the hospital’s 10-year anniversary. The hospital shared details of the event on Facebook.
