Neubrandenburg officials are preparing for New Year’s Eve festivities with a focus on public safety, anticipating a busy night for emergency responders. The city is bolstering its fire service-deploying both professional and volunteer firefighters-and assessing the need for additional ambulance support to manage potential incidents throughout the holiday period. While a city-sponsored event is not planned this year, residents and visitors can find a variety of smaller celebrations throughout the area.

Neubrandenburg is preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations with increased emergency services readiness to manage potential incidents. City officials are coordinating with regional authorities to ensure adequate resources are available throughout the holiday period, reflecting a proactive approach to public safety during a traditionally busy time for emergency responders.

Enhanced Fire Service Deployment

Both of Neubrandenburg’s volunteer fire departments will be on “standby” starting at 6:00 PM on December 31, according to city spokesperson Anja Seugling. This will supplement the city’s professional fire brigade, which consists of 19 personnel, with an additional 35 volunteer firefighters. The increased staffing is designed to ensure a rapid response to multiple emergencies occurring simultaneously.

The deployment strategy will mirror previous years, with volunteer firefighters handling smaller incidents independently. Larger fires and activations of fire alarm systems will trigger a joint response from both the professional and volunteer brigades. This tiered approach aims to optimize resource allocation and response times.

Local authorities are also evaluating the need for a second ambulance to be staffed around the clock on December 31 to accommodate a potential surge in emergency calls. This assessment is being conducted in collaboration with the surrounding county.

Firework Regulations and Safety Reminders

The city has not implemented any specific restrictions on fireworks beyond existing regulations outlined in the German Explosives Act. These regulations prohibit the use of fireworks in close proximity to churches, hospitals, nursing homes, and buildings deemed particularly flammable.

The law also stipulates that only individuals 18 years of age or older are permitted to discharge pyrotechnic devices, such as traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks.

Officials are also emphasizing the importance of fire prevention, referencing the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Fire Protection Act, which mandates that individuals act responsibly to prevent fires and facilitate rapid fire suppression. The city “strongly recommends” adherence to these guidelines. Last year, emergency services responded to over 35 fires within the Neubrandenburg police precinct’s jurisdiction, most of which involved burning trash containers, and all were quickly extinguished.

As in the previous year, Neubrandenburg will not host a city-sponsored New Year’s Eve party. However, several smaller events are planned, including a celebration at the Scala Club starting at 6:00 PM, a party at the Güterbahnhof beginning at 7:00 PM, and events at the Colosseum starting at 10:00 PM. A New Year’s Day run will also take place in the Kulturpark, starting at 8:00 AM.
