Former Jets Center Nick Mangold Dies at 41 After Kidney Disease Battle

New York Jets legend Nick Mangold has died at the age of 41, just 12 days after publicly revealing his need for a kidney transplant.

The team announced Mangold’s passing today, October 26, 2025. He had been battling a rare genetic disorder diagnosed in 2006 and was undergoing kidney dialysis. Mangold’s death is a significant loss for the NFL community and a stark reminder of the health challenges faced by professional athletes. “Nick was more than a legendary center,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

Drafted by the Jets in the first round in 2006 alongside D’Brickashaw Ferguson, forming the formidable “Nick & Brick” duo, Mangold anchored the offensive line during a period of success for the franchise, including playoff appearances in 2006, 2009, and 2010. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler and twice named a first-team All-Pro, known for his intelligence and durability. He was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022, a testament to his impact on the organization and its fans; you can learn more about the Ring of Honor on the team’s official website.

After retiring from the NFL in 2016 following 11 seasons with the Jets, Mangold transitioned to coaching, serving as an assistant coach at Delbarton High School in Morristown, New Jersey. He spoke fondly of the opportunity to mentor young players, telling the New York Post in 2024 that he enjoyed “molding boys into men and teach[ing] the game of football – but also teach[ing] them a little bit about life as you go along.” The National Kidney Foundation provides information about kidney disease and organ donation.

Mangold was a candidate for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the team stated they will continue to honor his legacy. Officials have not yet announced any memorial plans.
