Nick Reiner, son of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of his parents at their Southern California home last month.

Los Angeles prosecutors have charged Reiner, 32, with two counts of first-degree murder stemming from the December 14 deaths of the celebrated filmmaker and his wife. The case has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, where both Rob and Michele Reiner were well-respected figures.

He is currently being held without bail at a Los Angeles jail, according to inmate records. If convicted, Reiner faces a potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty.

Alan Jackson, Reiner’s attorney, has urged the public to avoid drawing premature conclusions. He previously asked that people “act with restraint and with dignity and with the respect that this system and this process deserves and that the family deserves.”

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were discovered deceased in their Brentwood home’s primary bedroom, having sustained multiple sharp force injuries, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

Police officials stated that Nick Reiner was arrested December 14 near the University of Southern California without incident.

Authorities have not yet released a potential motive for the crime.

Nick Reiner has previously been open about his struggles with drug addiction, telling People magazine a decade ago that he experienced periods of homelessness and had been in and out of rehab since the age of 15.

Those personal battles served as inspiration for the 2016 film “Being Charlie,” which Nick Reiner co-wrote and his father directed. The film offered a poignant look at addiction and recovery.

In a statement released following their parents’ deaths, two of Nick Reiner’s siblings pleaded for compassion. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

Rob Reiner rose to fame as a television star on the 1970s sitcom “All in the Family” before transitioning to directing, where he helmed some of Hollywood’s most beloved and enduring films, including “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me” and “When Harry Met Sally…”
