Dutch Railways Invests €400 Million in New Train Fleet, Former Executive Returns

Dutch Railways (NS) is undertaking a significant fleet modernization, investing approximately €400 million in dozens of new “hypermodern” sprinters, while also welcoming back Wouter Koolmees as an advisor. The investment signals NS’s commitment to improving rail service across the Netherlands as it navigates ongoing political challenges related to ticket pricing.

The new order includes 36 sprinters designed for versatility, capable of operating both as local trains and intercity services. This dual functionality aims to enhance operational flexibility and responsiveness to passenger demand, according to reports from NOS. The company also announced the acquisition of new Flirt Flex trains, which share the same dual-purpose capability, as detailed by Treinenweb.

The substantial investment in new rolling stock comes as NS seeks to address capacity constraints and improve the overall passenger experience. RTL.nl reports that the total investment reaches €400 million, funding the purchase of these advanced sprinters.

Alongside the fleet renewal, NS has brought back Wouter Koolmees, a former executive, as an advisor. Koolmees expressed his frustration with the political landscape surrounding train ticket prices, stating, “It is frustrating that politics is not adhering to the agreement on expensive train tickets.” According to De Telegraaf, Koolmees’s return suggests a renewed focus on navigating these political hurdles and securing favorable conditions for rail travel affordability.

The move by NS reflects a broader trend in the transportation sector towards modernization and sustainability, as companies strive to meet evolving passenger expectations and environmental goals. NU.nl also reported the €400 million investment in the new sprinter fleet.
