Political violence is again casting a shadow over Mexico’s upcoming elections, with the fatal shooting of Karina Aurora Díaz Hernández, the legal counsel for the Palizada municipality in campeche. Díaz Hernández,a former mayoral candidate with the ruling Morena party,was killed Saturday evening,prompting a homicide inquiry by state authorities. The attack highlights the increasing risks faced by political actors in Mexico as the country prepares for a pivotal national vote next year.

A legal representative for the Palizada municipal government was fatally shot in Campeche, Mexico, on Saturday, according to reports from local authorities.

Karina Aurora Díaz Hernández, the municipal legal counsel for Palizada, died after being struck by at least nine gunshots. The attack occurred as she was driving on Morelos Street in Palizada, officials confirmed.

Díaz Hernández was a candidate for mayor of Palizada in the upcoming 2024 elections, running on the Morena party ticket. She lost the race to Pedro Ayala Cámara, the current mayor, and subsequently became a vocal opponent of his administration.

According to early reports, Díaz Hernández was transported to a local hospital following the shooting, but succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical attention. The State Attorney General’s Office confirmed her death in a statement.

The shooting comes just days after President Claudia Sheinbaum led an event in Palizada focused on beneficiaries of social welfare programs. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges to political safety in the region as Mexico prepares for national elections.
