UAE Delivery Captains Receive Hydration Relief Amidst Scorching Summer Heat
A new initiative is providing thousands of bottles of water to delivery captains across the UAE this summer, aiming to combat dehydration as they work in temperatures exceeding 45°C.
Launched this summer, the “Relief for the Relentless” program is a partnership between Panadol, Careem, and several cloud kitchens including Rebel Foods, Epik Foods, and Kaykroo. The program distributes bottled water to captains with every order fulfilled, addressing the significant risk of dehydration faced by those working outdoors during the UAE’s intense heat. Captains often ride an average of 250-300km daily, completing 30-35 deliveries, and can lose one to two liters of sweat per hour.
Last year, from May to October, delivery captains completed five million orders via UAE apps, often with limited access to hydration. Dehydration in extreme heat can lead to headaches and migraines due to fluid and electrolyte loss, impacting blood flow to the brain. Understanding the physiological effects of heat exposure, like the dilation of blood vessels, is crucial for preventative health measures; more information can be found at the Mayo Clinic’s resource on heat stroke. Panadol’s involvement stems from its established role in pain relief, extending its support beyond product provision to proactive wellbeing.
The initiative extends beyond cloud kitchens, now including grocery fulfillment locations through Careem Quik, reaching captains handling high-density grocery orders in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. This widespread effort highlights the vital role delivery personnel play in daily life, particularly as demand for convenient delivery services continues to grow – a trend detailed in recent reports on UAE e-commerce. Officials stated the program will continue throughout the summer months, with ongoing monitoring of water distribution and captain feedback.
