Paula Blasi shocks field to win Amstel Gold Race women’s edition Spanish cyclist Paula Blasi claimed a stunning solo victory in the women’s Amstel Gold Race on Sunday, attacking late and powering to the finish in Valkenburg to capture her first WorldTour win at age 23. Blasi, riding for UAE Team ADQ, launched her decisive move with about 10 kilometers remaining, breaking clear of a reduced lead group and holding off the chasers to cross the line alone. Her winning time was 3 hours, 42 minutes and 18 seconds. The victory came as a surprise even to Blasi herself, who revealed she only learned the day before the race that she would be starting. “I heard just yesterday that I would be riding,” she said after crossing the finish line, still processing the result. On the podium, Blasi celebrated with a beer, a traditional gesture in the Limburg region where the race concludes. Her attack disrupted the plans of pre-race favorites, including Demi Vollering of Team SD Worx, who was unable to respond when Blasi made her move. Dutch team director Loes Gunnewijk praised the performance, saying she had never before said of a female rider what she felt witnessing Blasi’s ride. “I’ve never said anything like that about a woman cyclist before,” Gunnewijk remarked, highlighting the impact of the young Spaniard’s effort. Blasi’s win marks a breakthrough moment in her career and adds her name to the list of surprise victors in one of cycling’s most demanding one-day classics. The Amstel Gold Race, held annually in the southern Netherlands, continues to deliver dramatic finishes, and this year’s women’s edition delivered no exception.
