Explosion Near Delhi’s Red Fort Kills Eight, Injures Dozens

A powerful explosion ripped through a crowded area near the historic Red Fort in Delhi today, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens more, sending shockwaves through the Indian capital.

The blast occurred just before 7:00 PM local time as a white Hyundai car detonated at a red light, igniting a fire that engulfed nearby vehicles and rickshaws. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and horror, with body parts scattered across the road and people screaming as they fled the area. The streets were particularly busy due to the ongoing festival season, with many shoppers and fairgoers present. This incident raises concerns about security in the heart of India’s capital city.

“Rickshaws blew up, body parts of people scattered during the explosion and hardly anyone near the vehicle could be rescued,” said Mohsin Ali, a local worker, describing the immediate aftermath. Another witness, Shamim, who runs a clothing stall nearby, reported, “We were so scared, there was a huge fireball up in the air… The entire place was lit up because of the flames.” The force of the explosion shattered windows in surrounding buildings, and a ferris wheel at a nearby fairground also caught fire, trapping riders who called for help. Among the confirmed fatalities are a taxi driver and an 18-year-old shop worker. Many of the injured are being treated for severe burns at Lok Nayak hospital, where families are desperately searching for loved ones. Hospital workers described the scenes as “gruesome,” with many bodies charred beyond recognition. Authorities are currently working to identify the victims and determine the cause of the explosion; initial reports suggest a possible vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, though investigations are ongoing.
