Indonesian football club Persib Bandung is monitoring Argentinian defender gaston Avila as a potential mid-season signing. The 24-year-old center-back recently fell out of favor at Dutch giants Ajax following a 14.5 million euro transfer from Royal Antwerp and a subsequent loan spell in Brazil, prompting a return to his former club, Rosario Central. With uncertainty surrounding the future of current Persib defender Federico barba, Avila’s availability has sparked considerable interest among the club’s passionate fanbase and could provide a significant boost to their defensive line.

Persib Bandung is reportedly eyeing Argentinian defender Gaston Avila as a potential reinforcement during the transfer window.

Avila has become a subject of interest for the club’s supporters after his future in Europe became uncertain. Ajax Amsterdam recently announced that the 24-year-old is not currently in their plans for the upcoming season.

The Dutch club has loaned Avila back to his former team, Rosario Central, for the remainder of the 2026 season, according to Dutch media outlet Voetbalprimeur. This move effectively acknowledges a costly transfer that didn’t pan out as expected.

Avila arrived at Ajax from Royal Antwerp for a substantial fee of 14.5 million euros during the tenure of Sven Mislintat. However, a serious injury and inconsistent performances limited him to just eight appearances for De Godenzonen.

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars previously described the transfer process as “strange” and indicated that Avila didn’t quite fit the profile of a typical Ajax defender.

A loan spell to Fortaleza in Brazil was an attempt to revitalize his career, but that also proved unsuccessful as the club suffered relegation.

Marijn Beuker, Ajax’s Director of Football, believes the loan to Rosario Central is the best course of action at this time.

“Currently, there is no prospect for him to get playing time with us, so a new loan agreement is the best solution for all parties. We hope Gaston has success at his former club in Argentina,” Beuker stated, as quoted by Voetbalprimeur.

With limited opportunities in Amsterdam, the club is giving Avila a chance to rebuild his career in a familiar environment.

Interestingly, as Avila’s return to Argentina became official, his name began circulating among Indonesian football fans.

Persib Bandung is reportedly intensifying its search for a new center-back, particularly if Federico Barba departs the club.

Avila’s profile is considered promising: he’s 24 years old, has experience in both European and South American football, and has competed at a high level. The potential addition of a player with this background could significantly bolster Persib’s defensive options.
