Sony is implementing a mandatory age verification system for PlayStation Network users who wish to access voice chat and messaging features on PS5 and PS4 consoles. The rollout began in the UK and Ireland, with full implementation targeted for completion by June 2026.
According to reports, players will need to verify their age using one of three methods: government-issued ID, facial scan, or mobile authentication. This one-time verification is required specifically for communication features, even as access to games, the PlayStation Store and achievement tracking remains unrestricted for those who opt out.
The initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to enhance safety and provide age-appropriate experiences. Similar measures have recently been introduced by platforms such as Discord and Roblox, reflecting growing regulatory pressure on online services to protect younger users.
Sony stated the changes are designed to foster “safe, age-appropriate experiences for players and families while respecting their privacy” and to offer “meaningful control over their gaming experiences.” The company confirmed the policy applies to both PS5 and PS4 systems.
While the verification process is mandatory for social features, Sony emphasized that core gaming functionality will remain available regardless of a user’s verification status. The update represents a significant shift in how the platform manages user identity and access to interactive communication tools.
