Indonesian Police Bust Massive Illegal Motorcycle Export Ring; State Losses Reach Rp 177 Billion

Indonesian authorities have dismantled a sophisticated criminal syndicate involved in the theft and illegal export of motorcycles, an operation that has cost the state an estimated Rp 177 billion. The network, which has reportedly been operating since 2022, is alleged to have trafficked as many as 99,000 illegal motorcycles to international markets.

The scale of the operation came to light on May 11, 2026, during a police raid on a warehouse in South Jakarta. During the operation, officers seized 1,494 illegal motorcycles. Of the recovered vehicles, 957 were found intact, while 537 had already been disassembled to make shipping easier.

According to investigators, the syndicate targeted various brands and conditions of motorcycles—some appearing brand new and wrapped in plastic, while others were worn. The disassembled parts were being prepared for shipment to Togo in Africa and Tahiti.

Police have arrested a company director, identified by the initials WS, who is accused of managing the purchase, collection, dismantling, and exportation of the vehicles. WS was allegedly assisted by a team of 18 individuals, including two administrators and 16 operational staff.

Kombes Iman Imannudin, Dirkrimum of Polda Metro Jaya, stated during a press briefing at the scene on May 11, 2026, that the investigation is ongoing to uncover the full extent of the collaborative syndicate.

“We will continue to develop law enforcement or uncover this criminal act within the network, including the suppliers of the motor vehicles, the collectors, and the exporters. We will continue to deepen the investigation into this network because it is a collaborative syndicate,” Imannudin said.

The raid revealed a vast expanse of motorcycles and piles of parts throughout the warehouse, with heavy equipment on-site to facilitate the dismantling process. This massive seizure underscores the sophistication of organized vehicle theft rings and the challenges of monitoring illegal international shipping routes.

Authorities are continuing to interrogate the suspects to identify further suppliers and collaborators within the network.
