Indonesian Navy Bolsters Maritime Safety with Arrival of First Submarine Rescue Ship

The advanced ship arrived in Jakarta on May 11, 2026, following a 54-day voyage from Germany. A product of strategic collaboration between Indonesia and Germany, the vessel is designed to provide critical support for the navy’s underwater operations.

While the ship is primarily a hydrography and oceanography support vessel used for underwater mapping and surveying, it is specifically equipped to facilitate submarine rescue missions. This dual-purpose capability allows the TNI AL to maintain precise seabed data while remaining prepared for emergency recovery operations.

To complete the rescue ecosystem, the Indonesian Navy has received the vessel and is further augmenting its capabilities by constructing a specialized Submarine Rescue Vehicle (SRV) in the United Kingdom.

The integration of the KRI Canopus-936 and the upcoming SRV underscores a significant shift in Indonesia’s naval strategy, prioritizing not only surveillance and mapping but also the safety and recovery of its submarine fleet in the region’s complex underwater environments.
