The guide covers everything from dress length and accessories to shapewear and footwear, offering tips for both conventional elegance and modern flair.

Navigating the world of formalwear – from the perfect dress to the right accessories – can be tricky. But sticking to a few key fashion principles can help ensure you make a stylish statement.

Long Gown or Not?

Traditionally, long gowns are the go-to choice for formal events. However, there’s room for flexibility depending on the occasion. “Not all balls are created equal. It’s important to recognize the difference between less formal events and large-scale galas with a prescribed dress code,” explains stylist Irena Vokrojová.

The most common dress code you’ll encounter is black tie. “In that case, always opt for a long gown and encourage men to wear tuxedos. There’s no room for debate,” Vokrojová emphasizes. But for a less formal event, she suggests considering midi dresses, a well-tailored jumpsuit, or a pantsuit.

For particularly prestigious events, like the Opera Ball, you might encounter a white tie dress code. In this instance, a formal ballgown is essential, and you should consider adding accessories like elbow-length gloves and statement jewelry. Men are expected to wear a tailcoat and patent leather shoes.

Dresses for Curvier Figures

If you’re not searching for a show-stopping ballgown, skip the rental shops and browse collections from your favorite brands. You can often find beautiful evening dresses at a price comparable to a rental. When it comes to the silhouette, choose what flatters your figure and makes you feel confident.

“For fuller figures, I recommend opting for smoother styles without excessive embellishment,” advises Irena Vokrojová. Darker colors can help create a slimming effect, but you don’t have to stick to black. “Darker greens, burgundy, or chocolate brown work wonderfully.”

Shapewear is Your Friend

Don’t hesitate to use shapewear to smooth out any problem areas and create a sleek silhouette. A bodysuit is the most suitable option for evening dresses. If you don’t need to correct your figure, still choose comfortable and invisible undergarments.

Don’t Forget the Jewelry

“Accessories, in the form of jewelry and a clutch, are an integral part of the overall look. Therefore, they should always be chosen in relation to the dress, hair, and makeup,” Vokrojová stresses, adding that a ball is a special occasion where you can embrace bolder accessories.

“If you’re unsure about combining jewelry, always choose just one statement piece. If you opt for large earrings, don’t add a prominent necklace, and vice versa,” the stylist recommends.

Leave the Large Bag at Home

When it comes to choosing a bag, stick to small evening clutches and shell-shaped purses. A simple design is always a safe bet, but if you’re aiming for a perfect look, explore interesting options. The simpler the dress, the more freedom you have with your clutch choice.

Heels or Sandals?

Put the same energy into choosing your shoes as you do your dress. Heels are a classic choice, and their pointed toe can beautifully elongate the silhouette, but sandals with heels also pair well with long gowns. “More ornate sandals can substitute for jewelry and visually lighten voluminous dresses,” Vokrojová explains.

However, if you’re attending a ball with a prescribed dress code, adhere to the recommended closed-toe shoes, such as heels. This applies to black tie (with the exception of black tie creative) and white tie dress codes.

How to Rock It Without Heels?

And what if you can’t wear heels for any reason? “If you can’t manage even a low heel, help yourself with the length of the dress. It should fall to the floor to keep your secret safe,” Vokrojová advises.

Skip the Stockings

And what about stockings? “Remember, pantyhose don’t belong under long dresses,” the stylist states unequivocally, adding that you can wear them with midi dresses at most. “Avoid flesh-toned stockings under all circumstances, and if you must, opt for sheer tights in the color of your shoes,” she adds.
