MLB Caps Pitch-Level Betting Following Indictments of Guardians Pitchers

Major League Baseball announced today a new rule capping pitch-level bets at $200 and prohibiting them in parlays, a move directly responding to recent allegations of game manipulation involving Cleveland Guardians pitchers.

The decision comes just one day after Emmanuel Clase and Luis L. Ortiz were indicted on charges related to allegedly rigging pitches during MLB games. The Department of Justice alleges Clase coordinated with others, often throwing pitches intentionally outside the strike zone – sometimes even in the dirt – on the first pitch of an at-bat, and that he received financial benefits for doing so. Court documents indicate Clase and Ortiz could face up to 65 years in prison if convicted. This scandal raises concerns about the vulnerability of baseball to corruption in the rapidly expanding sports betting market.

MLB stated that micro-bets on individual pitches present “heightened integrity risks” due to their focus on single events determined by individual players and their limited impact on overall game outcomes. “Since the Supreme Court decision opened the door to legalized sports betting, Major League Baseball has continuously worked with industry and regulatory stakeholders across the country to uphold our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred in a released statement. The league’s move is intended to reduce incentives for players to compromise the game for personal gain, a growing concern as sports betting becomes more widespread.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine praised the league’s action, urging other sports organizations to follow suit. DraftKings and FanDuel, leading sportsbooks, have committed to adjusting their markets to comply with the new regulations. You can find more information about MLB’s stance on sports betting here.

Officials stated that MLB will continue to monitor the situation and collaborate with stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of the game.
