Acworth, Georgia – A Publix cashier is drawing customers from across the region, with shoppers willingly waiting up to 40 minutes to experience his friendly service. Michael Masterangelo, who has worked at the store for a decade, has become a local sensation, not only for his warm greetings but also for his fundraising efforts for the Special Olympics.

“They will approach here specifically just to get in his line,” said Dayna Peshel, Masterangelo’s mother. “They will wait 30 or 40 minutes just to get in his line. It means everything. I am so proud of him.” The extended wait times haven’t deterred customers, who actively seek out Masterangelo’s lane.

Masterangelo, who has an intellectual disability, consistently brings a positive energy to his work. Store Manager Courtney McGuinness noted, “His positivity that he comes in every day with, it makes working and shopping here enjoyable. He’s always smiling. He’s always interacting.” This dedication to customer service has created a unique and valued experience for shoppers.

How important is encountering friendly staff while shopping?

Masterangelo greets each customer as if they were an old friend, expressing his joy in his role. “I like ringing people up and seeing people every day!” he said. “I’m just so happy to be here, every day to work.” Customers echo this sentiment, with one shopper stating, “As soon as I walk in the door, I look for him. And if he’s here, it just changes everything.”

Fundraising Success for Special Olympics

Beyond his cheerful demeanor, Masterangelo has been actively fundraising for the Special Olympics, an organization he’s been involved with since childhood. He invited customers to donate while checking out their groceries, setting a personal goal that he quickly surpassed. In just six days, he raised an impressive $31,603.

“He has raised more than some districts in our region,” McGuinness said, highlighting the significant impact of his efforts. Masterangelo expressed his gratitude, saying, “They create me so happy and encourage me!” His mother also shared her pride, noting the positive influence he has on others. “I perceive like I did a good job raising him and he is a light to everyone. I get text messages, phone calls.”
