Several countries are offering free vacations to boost tourism, according to a recent social media post that has garnered over 700,000 views on TikTok. Qatar is cited as an example, with the potential for travelers flying with Qatar Airways from London to Hong Kong to enjoy up to three days in Doha during a layover.

Qatar Airways Offers Standard and Luxury Stopover Packages

Qatar Airways is promoting various stopover packages on its website, described as “the world’s best value stopovers.” The airline highlights the opportunity to experience local culture, shopping, and dining, alongside adventure activities like dune bashing, kitesurfing, and kayaking. This strategy underscores Qatar’s broader efforts to attract tourists and stimulate its local economy.

Travelers booking flights with a Doha layover between 12 and 96 hours can take advantage of these packages. Options include Standard, Premium, Premium Beach, and Luxury packages. The Standard package offers a choice of four-star hotels from brands like IHG, Hilton, and Marriott.

While not entirely free, the packages are competitively priced. An overnight stay in a selected hotel starts at approximately $11 USD, with four nights available from an additional $59 USD to the flight price. The Luxury package, featuring five-star hotels from Accor, IHG, and Hyatt with breakfast included, is more expensive, starting at around $64 USD per night, or $269 USD for four nights.

Would you take a longer layover for a free vacation?

Icelandair Employs Similar Strategy

Qatar isn’t the only airline utilizing this approach. Icelandair also offers stopovers without any flight price surcharge for passengers traveling over the Atlantic, such as from London to Latest York. Travelers can stay in Iceland for up to a week. The airline’s website provides suggestions for 24, 48, or 72-hour itineraries, highlighting attractions like geothermal pools and the Northern Lights.

According to its website, Icelandair does not charge an additional fee for stopovers, but accommodations must be booked separately, with options ranging from cozy cabins to luxury hotels.

Qatar Airways and Icelandair are not alone in offering these stopover packages. Other airlines, including Turkish Airlines (stopovers in Istanbul), Tap Air Portugal (stopovers in Porto or Lisbon), and Singapore Airlines (stopovers in Singapore), are also implementing similar strategies.
