Queen Máxima of the Netherlands continues to be a leading international voice on financial inclusion, recently completing a working visit to New York amidst winter weather. Before her role as Queen Consort and dedicated advocate for financial well-being, Máxima forged an early career path-supporting herself while studying economics in Argentina-that shaped her future work. This article explores the foundations of her expertise, from early roles in financial research and sales to her current position as UN Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance.

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands has long been recognized for her business acumen, alongside her royal duties. With a degree in economics and a distinguished international career, she’s a respected voice on financial well-being – a topic she actively champions as Honorary Chair of the Wijzer in geldzaken platform and a UN Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance. But before ascending to the Dutch throne, Máxima held a series of roles that laid the foundation for her future work.

Máxima graduated from the Catholic University of Argentina in 1995. Despite her privileged background, she supported herself during her studies in Buenos Aires. Rather than a typical student job, she pursued opportunities aligned with her developing interests. What was her first job?

While a student, she worked at Mercado Abierto S.A., conducting research into software focused on the financial markets. She also held a position on the sales team at Boston Securities S.A. in Buenos Aires. In addition, Máxima supplemented her income by teaching English to children and adults, and tutoring high school students and freshmen in mathematics. This early exposure to both the financial sector and education would later inform her advocacy work.

Today, Queen Máxima is deeply involved in promoting financial health both within the Netherlands and internationally. Her efforts center on preventing debt, fostering financial literacy, and encouraging savings. Last week, she traveled to New York for a two-day visit, braving snowy conditions (see video below).

The visit, as reported by the Dutch Government Communications Service, was in support of her role as UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance (UNSGSA).

Máxima engaged in strategic discussions with staff from the UNSGSA office, which supports her international work on financial health. The office is housed within the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). On Wednesday afternoon, the Queen met with the new UNDP Director, Alexander De Croo, to discuss the progress of her UN initiatives. This work underscores the growing global focus on financial inclusion and its impact on economic development.
