Nebraska’s Emmett Johnson Earns Heisman Consideration After Record-Breaking Performance
Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson is now firmly in the national conversation after a stellar performance against UCLA, prompting head coach Matt Rhule to publicly endorse him as a Heisman Trophy candidate.
Johnson had a career day yesterday, leading the Huskers to a 28-21 victory over the Bruins with 129 rushing yards and a touchdown, coupled with 103 receiving yards and two additional touchdowns for a total of 232 all-purpose yards. He became the first Nebraska player to surpass 100 yards both on the ground and through the air in a single game. “I personally believe Emmett Johnson should be a Heisman candidate,” Rhule said Monday afternoon. “I think he should be a Doak Walker finalist, if not winner, and I think what he’s doing is fantastic.”
Through 10 games this season, Johnson has rushed for 1,131 yards – ranking second nationally – and added 300 receiving yards, totaling 14 touchdowns. This impressive output comes as Nebraska navigates significant changes in college football, including the evolving landscape of the transfer portal. Rhule also highlighted the impact of Nebraska’s increased financial resources, stating, “We can now go get anybody we want.”
The win over UCLA, fueled by the strong performances of Johnson and freshman quarterback TJ Lateef (13-of-15 for 205 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start), marks Nebraska’s first three-road-game winning streak since 2014. Rhule recently signed a contract extension through 2032, signaling a long-term commitment to building a competitive program in Lincoln. The team will now use its idle week to prepare for a challenging November 22nd matchup against Penn State.
Rhule emphasized the importance of continued development, stating he plans to utilize the bye week for intensive coaching and recruiting, aiming to capitalize on the unique atmosphere and passionate fanbase that defines Husker Nation.
