Fifth-ranked Elena Rybakina will face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Australian Open women’s final, setting the stage for a rematch of the 2023 Melbourne championship match.
Rybakina, who represents Kazakhstan after being born in Moscow, advanced to the final with a commanding victory over American Jessica Pegula, 6-3, 7-6.
The Kazakhstani player delivered another dominant performance, reaching her third Grand Slam final without dropping a single set throughout the tournament – despite facing two top-6 opponents in her last two matches. This impressive run underscores Rybakina’s growing stature as a major force in women’s tennis.
Rybakina, who chose to represent Kazakhstan eight years ago, will compete for her second Grand Slam title after winning Wimbledon in 2022 and falling to Sabalenka in the Australian Open final several months later. Now, she has a prime opportunity for revenge against the top-ranked Sabalenka, who is aiming for her fourth consecutive final appearance in the tournament.
The second women’s semifinal appeared to be heading for a swift conclusion when Rybakina held three match points at 6-3, 5-3 after 70 minutes of play.
Up to that point, Rybakina had completely controlled the match, leaving little room for Pegula to mount a comeback. She raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set, unsettling Pegula, who briefly took her frustration out on her racket before ultimately losing the set 3-6.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Rybakina dominating until reaching 5-3 and those three missed match points. However, Pegula refused to concede, battling back to force a tiebreak and inject new life into the contest.
The tiebreak brought a surge of excitement for the fans, as Pegula even earned a set point that, if converted, would have sent the match to a deciding third set. Rybakina, however, remained composed and ultimately prevailed 9-7 to secure her place in the final.
