Rory McIlroy is calling for a date change to the Australian Open, citing a congested global golf schedule that limits player participation.

Rory McIlroy used his appearance at the Crown Australian Open to urge tournament organizers to reconsider the event’s date, hoping to open the door for more top players to compete.

McIlroy, a marquee name at Royal Melbourne, finished in a tie for 14th place, eight strokes behind winner Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen. Despite a solid performance, McIlroy highlighted a scheduling conflict as a major obstacle to broader participation. The tournament overlapped with the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa (also a DP World Tour event) and the Hero World Challenge (a non-official PGA Tour event).

“I’m delighted to be back here, it’s been over ten years since I last played the Australian Open,” said the five-time major champion after a final-round 69 (-2). “It’s a golf tournament with huge potential, and I think it showed a little bit of that this week. There’s still work to be done.”

Conversations need to happen with people much more important than me

The former world number one stressed the need for a scheduling overhaul to make the tournament more accessible: “I would love to see more guys come down here. But it’s difficult. There are three tournaments going on at the same time this week. Conversations need to happen with people much more important than me, the people who set the schedules and take care of all of that.”

McIlroy expressed hope for a future solution: “Hopefully the Australian Open can find a date that works for everyone, and everyone can at least have the option to come and play.”

A Well-Deserved Break

Beyond his call for scheduling adjustments, the Australian Open marked the end of a historic season for McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam in April with his victory at the Masters. The 36-year-old golfer is now looking forward to a much-needed break before returning to the fairways at the Dubai Invitational in January.

“I’m looking forward to getting a bit of rest,” the father of one shared. “I had a pretty busy run after the summer, with the Irish Open, then the Ryder Cup, and then a lot of travel these last few months. I’m looking forward to having some downtime, reflecting on everything, maybe watching a few tournaments in replay. I haven’t really allowed myself to do that yet.”

McIlroy concluded by looking ahead to the holiday season: “Looking forward to enjoying the Christmas break, putting my feet up, having a few glasses of wine and reflecting on an incredible year.”
