Ruby Rose Blames Sydney Sweeney for ‘Christy’ Box Office Disappointment
Actress Ruby Rose publicly criticized Sydney Sweeney today, alleging Sweeney’s involvement contributed to the disappointing $1.3 million opening weekend for the biopic Christy, despite Sweeney’s own statements of pride in the film’s potential impact.
Rose, who was originally attached to play boxer Christy Martin in the film, shared her reaction on Threads, stating the initial script was “incredible” and that the production team had significant experience with the subject matter, including LGBTQ+ representation. “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay,” she wrote. “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people.’ None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”
Rose later apologized for using the term “cretin,” stating she believed it meant “creature” in old English and regretting its ableist connotation, replacing it with “psychopath.” Sweeney, who also produced the film directed by David Michôd, previously defended the project amid controversy surrounding a recent American Eagle advertisement that drew accusations of promoting eugenics. She stated on Instagram that if the film gave “even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” adding that the project had been the “most impactful” of her life.
The film’s opening weekend performance, following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, marks Black Bear’s first theatrical distribution release. Representatives for Sweeney have been contacted for comment, and the public debate highlights the increasing scrutiny actors face regarding their public image and the potential impact on their projects.
Further statements from Sweeney’s team are expected as the controversy continues to unfold.
