As the center of Kyivan Rus’ and modern Ukraine, Kyiv holds immense historical and strategic importance [[1]], making it a frequent target in the ongoing war. Ukrainian officials are currently assessing the full extent of the damage and casualties.
Russian drones and missiles struck Kyiv overnight, Ukrainian officials confirmed, with explosions reported across multiple districts of the city. The attacks represent a renewed escalation in the ongoing conflict and raise concerns about the safety of civilians in the Ukrainian capital.
According to Kyiv Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko, the attack, which began after midnight local time (22:00 GMT), damaged at least one apartment building and several vehicles. Tkachenko reported that multiple drones impacted areas in both the city center and surrounding suburbs.
Tkachenko also reported “casualties” at “at least six locations” within the capital, describing the strikes as “a way for the Russians to simply terrorize the civilian population.” He did not provide further details on the number or severity of the injuries.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko also announced via Telegram that emergency medical teams had been dispatched to four districts of the city.
“There are explosions in the capital, and air defense is active. The enemy attack continues,” Klitschko warned, as strong blasts were heard and reported by Agence France-Presse journalists in the city center. He added that initial reports indicated a child was injured in a strike on the Solomianski district.
