As the war in Ukraine continues, the Russian economy is facing increasing strain, with stark regional disparities emerging in the impact of Western sanctions. A recent viral video highlighting drastically low property prices in the Arctic city of Vorkuta offers a glimpse into the economic realities facing many Russians outside of major metropolitan areas. the clip, featuring a moscow-based influencer, underscores a growing divide where basic housing can cost less than consumer goods like the latest smartphones.

The Irish Sun prichádza s desivou skutočnosťou.

Sankcie ochromili export ruskej ropy a zemného plynu, pričom v meste Vorkura išlo o základný zdroj príjmu. Súčasná situácia preto ešte viac prehlbuje rozdiely medzi bohatou a chudobnou časťou obyvateľstva.

MOSKVA – Some Russians are finding it difficult to know whether to weep or laugh at their current circumstances. The war in Ukraine and subsequent Western sanctions have caused significant economic fallout, dramatically impacting property prices.

While affluent residents of Moscow appear largely shielded from the effects of the war and sanctions, the situation is starkly different for many Russians living in other parts of the country. A recent video posted by a social media influencer provides a striking example of the disparity, humorously illustrating the state of the real estate market.

“I’m literally holding an apartment in Vorkuta in my hands,” the influencer says with a laugh, filming herself with one of the latest iPhone models. Despite the sanctions driving up the cost of Apple products in Russia, they remain a status symbol for Moscow’s wealthy. She then shares screenshots of property listings.

Extremely Low Property Prices

The stark reality is highlighted by The Irish Sun, which reports that the cheapest apartment currently available in Vorkuta is listed for 83,000 rubles. A new iPhone 17 Pro Max, however, costs around 200,740 rubles in Russia. For that price, buyers could purchase a three-room apartment in reasonable condition.

Vorkuta, located north of the Arctic Circle, is Russia’s third-largest city by area and is home to approximately 50,000 residents. The region is known for its harsh conditions year-round. “You can currently buy the cheapest apartment in Vorkuta – a studio measuring 34.4 square meters – for 60 percent less than a new iPhone,” explained international economy expert Charles Lichfield. Apartments of around 57 square meters with separate bedrooms are available for approximately £950.

Financial Support from China

“We are at a point where Russia has essentially exhausted its reserve fund. The economy was hit earlier, but Putin was clever enough to shield Moscow and St. Petersburg from the worst of it,” one analyst stated, adding that China has begun lending money to Russia, a practice that only began at the end of 2025.

Sanctions have crippled Russia’s exports of oil and natural gas, key revenue sources for cities like Vorkuta. This situation is exacerbating the growing divide between the country’s rich and poor. The dramatic price difference in Vorkuta underscores the uneven economic impact of the war and sanctions across Russia, and highlights the growing financial pressures facing many Russian citizens.
