Russia-US-Ukraine Talks Held in Geneva

Geneva is hosting another round of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, as the four-year conflict continues to reshape the geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe. Delegations from Moscow and Kyiv met Tuesday for U.S.-brokered talks, with limited expectations for immediate breakthroughs.

The two-day discussions in Switzerland come just a week before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite a U.S. Deadline of June for a settlement, both sides appear entrenched in their positions regarding key territorial disputes and future security arrangements, according to reports.

Ukrainian delegation head Rustem Umerov shared photos on social media depicting the three delegations seated at a horseshoe-shaped table, with Ukrainian and Russian officials facing each other. President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law Jared Kushner were positioned at the head of the table alongside flags representing the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, and Switzerland.

“The agenda includes security and humanitarian issues,” Umerov said, adding that the Ukrainian team would approach the talks “without excessive expectations.”

Negotiations surrounding the future of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory are anticipated to be particularly challenging. A source familiar with the talks, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that Russia continues to insist on Ukraine ceding control of the eastern Donbas region. This insistence highlights a major sticking point in the negotiations.

In addition to the delegation heads, American, Russian, and Ukrainian military chiefs are also in Geneva to discuss potential mechanisms for ceasefire monitoring and implementation should a peace agreement be reached. The development underscores the complexities involved in establishing a lasting cessation of hostilities.

The talks are taking place as both sides continue military operations. Al Jazeera reports that both sides are ramping up attacks ahead of the negotiations. NBC News notes that land remains a central focus of the discussions. The Washington Post details Russia’s continued pressure on Ukraine to accept a peace deal on its terms.
