Moscow announced the unexpected death of its ambassador to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, on Monday, at age 70. Matsegora’s passing occurs as Russia and North Korea have forged increasingly close ties-a relationship viewed with concern by Western governments-and amid ongoing allegations of arms trading linked to the conflict in Ukraine. as a veteran diplomat with decades of experience in Pyongyang, Matsegora was a key architect of the current strengthened, yet isolated, partnership between the two nations.

The Russian ambassador to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, a key figure in fostering closer ties between Pyongyang and Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, has died unexpectedly, Russian officials announced Monday. He was 70 years old.

Matsegora’s death comes at a sensitive time, as Russia and North Korea have significantly strengthened their diplomatic, military, and economic relationship, a development that has raised concerns among Western nations. The growing partnership has seen North Korea providing Russia with support in its conflict with Ukraine, including reportedly supplying soldiers and munitions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated “with deep regret” that Matsegora passed away on December 6, 2025. The ministry lauded his decades-long career dedicated to fostering cooperation between North Korea and the Soviet Union, and later Russia.

A Long Career Focused on North Korea

Beginning in the late 1970s, Matsegora, a fluent Korean speaker, dedicated his diplomatic efforts to economic and diplomatic collaboration between North Korea and the USSR, and subsequently Russia. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, he played a crucial role in building the “unprecedented level of relations” currently enjoyed by the two countries.

“Under his wise and sensitive leadership, several generations of diplomats and specialists on Korea were trained,” the ministry said in a statement. Matsegora, who served as ambassador to Pyongyang since 2014, was described as a “driving force” behind the sustained effort to build the current strong bilateral ties.

Condolences from Kim Jong-un

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent his condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin following Matsegora’s “sudden” death, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Tuesday morning. Kim described the diplomat’s passing as a “heartbreaking event and a great loss,” particularly as the relationship between North Korea and Russia enters a “crucial historical phase.”

Notre dossier sur la Corée du Nord

The deepening relationship between North Korea and Russia was formalized in 2024 with a mutual defense pact signed during an official visit by Vladimir Putin to Pyongyang. North Korea has since actively supported Russia’s war effort, reportedly deploying thousands of soldiers to counter Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region bordering Russia between late 2024 and spring 2025. South Korea alleges that Moscow has reciprocated by providing North Korea with sensitive military technologies in exchange for the arms and ammunition. This exchange has prompted international scrutiny and concerns about potential violations of UN sanctions.
