Specialized Swimming Program Launched to Support Individuals with Dementia
A new aquatic initiative has launched in Bussum, designed specifically to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for individuals living with mild dementia and early-stage memory loss. Through tailored weekly sessions at Sportcentrum De Zandzee, participants can engage in low-impact exercise aimed at improving both physical health and mental well-being.
Integrating low-impact physical activity into dementia care is increasingly recognized as a vital component of holistic patient wellness, as it addresses both the physical and emotional needs of the individual.
While swimming cannot stop the progression of dementia, evidence suggests that consistent physical movement may help slow the course of the condition. Beyond the physiological benefits, moving in warm water is noted for its positive influence on a patient’s memory and overall sense of well-being, while fostering social interaction and relaxation.
To accommodate the specific needs of this population, the recreation pool is reserved every Monday from 2:15 p.m. To 3:00 p.m. The program prioritizes a low-stimulus environment to reduce anxiety and increase safety. Key features of the sessions include:
- Water maintained at a warm 89.6°F (32°C).
- Access to shallow areas where participants can remain standing.
- Limited group sizes and reduced noise levels to ensure a calm atmosphere.
- Increased staff attention focused on safety and comfort.
The program emphasizes a supportive network, noting that the presence of a caregiver or family member is highly desirable. These companions are permitted to join the participants in the water or observe from the terrace at no additional cost. To further encourage social connectivity, the facility provides an opportunity for participants and their caregivers to share coffee or tea after the session.
The initiative officially began on March 2, 2026. To maintain safety and monitor group capacity, pre-registration is required. An introductory lesson is available for €5.00, and 10-session passes are offered for €55.00.
This development underscores the importance of creating accessible, specialized health offerings that allow individuals with cognitive impairments to maintain their autonomy and physical health in a dignified setting.
