Thes developments come as the European Union prioritizes grid upgrades to support the growing integration of renewable energy sources and enhance energy security across the region [[3]].

Latvia’s state-owned utility, Sadales Tīkls, is prioritizing the delivery of a reliable and stable electricity supply as it looks ahead to 2026, even as demand for power is expected to rise alongside increasing quality expectations from consumers.

The company, a subsidiary of Latvenergo, reported increased profits for the first nine months of 2023, signaling a strong financial position as it prepares for significant infrastructure investments. According to company filings, Sadales Tīkls’ turnover reached €281.133 million, a 2.1% increase year-over-year, while net profit rose 20.6% to €22.143 million.

“Considering the forecasts from the Ministry of Climate and Energy regarding the increasing share of electricity in the national economy, the demand for quality electricity supply and capacity availability will only grow, and with it, public expectations regarding quality will also increase,” said Jansons. “This means increasingly substantial investments in infrastructure, both across Latvia and throughout Europe.”

The European Commission’s new plan includes a mandate to begin more centralized and proactive electricity grid planning, a move prompted by significant investment in renewable energy sources across the European Union that has not been matched by corresponding grid modernization and expansion. Experts have noted a considerable lag in upgrading electrical infrastructure to support the growing influx of renewable energy.

Sadales Tīkls is actively working to secure EU funding to accelerate development while mitigating the impact on consumer tariffs. The company is also focused on strengthening grid resilience in light of the current geopolitical landscape, and plans to leverage EU funding for this purpose, alongside bolstering employee preparedness to protect infrastructure during various crises. The company is expanding its Zemessardze (Latvian Home Guard) units to enhance security measures.

“The availability of EU funding plays a very large role – in order to meet the growing needs of customers and businesses in a timely manner, investments in electricity supply infrastructure must be made now, and this is a prerequisite for strengthening the entire national economy,” Jansons stated.

Sadales Tīkls is responsible for the operation, restoration, and planned development of Latvia’s distribution grid, as well as monitoring electricity consumption, implementing loss reduction measures, and managing electricity metering. The company also handles the creation of new grid connections.

In the first nine months of 2022, Sadales Tīkls reported a turnover of €275.356 million and a profit of €18.366 million, according to previous company reports.
