According to a report by The Elec, Samsung is currently recruiting specialized personnel, including mechanical and electrical project managers, for the facility. This hiring phase indicates the final stages of preparation before mass production can begin.
The company is also actively installing the necessary production equipment for manufacturing the CMOS image sensors. Production could commence as soon as March, potentially paving the way for Samsung-built sensors to appear in Apple’s iPhone 18 family, slated for release next year. The quality of smartphone cameras remains a key battleground for innovation, driving demand for advanced sensor technology.

Infrastructure development, including the installation of gas and water lines, is currently underway. This is a critical step before production equipment is installed within the cleanroom – a sterile environment essential for semiconductor manufacturing.

Earlier this month, Samsung informed the Austin city council of plans for an additional $19 billion investment in the facility. This investment will cover maintenance, repairs, and the purchase of advanced manufacturing equipment. For years, Sony has been the primary supplier of camera sensors for iPhones. However, that dominance may be shifting. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that Apple is evaluating Samsung’s three-layer stacked sensor technology.
This design separates the photodiode layer, which captures light, from the processing layer, enabling faster image capture speeds, improved low-light performance, enhanced dynamic range, and greater color accuracy.
If adopted, Apple could potentially make the new sensor an exclusive feature for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, further differentiating its premium lineup.
