Governor of Samut Songkhram Province Joins Buddhists in Makha Bucha Observance
Samut Songkhram Governor Chayachai Sang-in participated in religious ceremonies marking Makha Bucha Day on March 3, 2026, at Wat Phetchrasamut Worawihan temple. The annual observance commemorates a significant event in Buddhist history.
The governor presided over the lay side of the ceremony, lighting candles and offering prayers before joining in a dharma discourse and circumambulation of the temple’s main hall, known as the Ubosot. The event began at 7:00 PM. Phrakru Samut Wachiranuwat, Deputy Abbot of Wat Phetchrasamut Worawihan, led the religious proceedings and delivered a sermon.
Makha Bucha Day traditionally falls on the full moon of the third lunar month and commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 enlightened monks who traveled to meet the Buddha without prior arrangement. This event, known as the Chaturanga Sammelan, is considered a pivotal moment in the early Buddhist community. All of the monks present had been ordained directly by the Buddha and had attained enlightenment.
The day also marks the occasion when the Buddha delivered the Ovada Patimokkha, a set of principles considered the core of Buddhist teachings. The observance included the chanting of prayers and the traditional circling of the Ubosot three times in a clockwise direction.
Attendees included district officials, heads of government departments, military personnel, police officers, monks, nuns and members of the public. The Public Relations Department of Samut Songkhram Province provided images and news coverage of the event.
Wat Phetchrasamut Worawihan, formerly known as Wat Srijumpa, is a historic temple with a history spanning over 500 years. The temple is renowned as the home of “Luang Pho Ban Laem,” a revered Buddha image considered sacred to the region. Phra Ratchasamut Wachirasophon serves as the current abbot and advisor to the 15th Patriarchal Region.
