Scotty Ramon, known to millions as Kid Cudi, is stepping into the art world with his first solo exhibition, “Echoes of the Past,” now on display at Ruttkowski;68 in Paris.

Ramon, born in 1984 in Cleveland, Ohio, began painting just over a year ago. His debut canvas features a soothing pink backdrop, dramatically contrasted by a central figure seemingly engaged in self-sabotage. “A stark image reduced to maximum expression,” describes the work, marking the beginning of a prolific creative burst. Ideas flowed quickly, resulting in a series of canvases exploring darkness through a vibrant chromatic spectrum.

A recurring character, Max – Ramon’s alter-ego – appears throughout the exhibition, often depicted as being pursued by “gleeful demons” or shadowed by ominous figures. Other pieces feature Max as simply a head, a smooth brown form representing the isolation of confronting inner truths. Ramon experiments with both biomorphic shapes and flat geometric configurations, creating compositions with a synesthetic quality. The exhibition marks a significant new direction for the multi-talented artist, who first gained fame as a musician.

Ramon’s artistic journey began with childhood dreams of becoming a cartoonist, a creative freedom he’s now rediscovered alongside the complexities of lived experience. His paintings echo the same interplay of melancholy and happiness found in his music. Whereas not strictly self-portraits, the works suggest a search for empowerment. Despite unsettling imagery and provocative wording, Ramon leaves room for interpretation, suggesting a journey “not ‘trapped’ or ‘lost,’ but emerging from a nightmare and traveling towards the light.”

Adding another layer to the immersive experience, Ramon has also composed an original sound component for the gallery. Atmospheric and electric, the score’s driving synths and beat enhance the artwork and contribute to the overall vibe.
