South Korea‘s Kukkiwon, the global headquarters for Taekwondo, has tapped celebrated singer Seol Woon-do as a promotional ambassador in a move aimed at bolstering the martial art’s international image and cultural impact. The appointment, announced in april, unites the worlds of traditional discipline and modern entertainment, leveraging Woon-do’s widespread popularity to further promote Taekwondo’s values of character, discipline, and mental fortitude to an estimated 200 million practitioners worldwide. This report from Munhwa Ilbo offers a personal reflection on Woon-do’s influence and dedication to the sport, alongside insights from prominent figures within the Korean entertainment industry.

■ Thank you – Kukkiwon Ambassador Seol Woon-do

Taekwondo, South Korea’s national sport, is a globally recognized martial art emphasizing character development, discipline, and mental fortitude. More than just physical training, it cultivates inner strength and is practiced by an estimated 200 million people in over 214 countries, and is also an official Olympic sport.

The sport’s reach extends beyond borders, with many recognizing taekwondo even without knowing Korea itself. It serves as a unifying force, transcending nationality, race, and culture. Notably, practitioners worldwide utilize Korean terminology, making taekwondo a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy. It’s a brand that embodies Korea, healing divisions and uniting people across generations and backgrounds.

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Seol Woon-do, the Kukkiwon’s promotional ambassador, at a taekwondo event. I rarely take photos, but I was so happy to see him that I asked for one.

Kukkiwon appointed Woon-do as its ambassador in April to enhance the positive image of taekwondo and promote its key policies and initiatives. “Taekwondo and music share a common thread,” Woon-do explained. “Just as a song requires dedication and passion to move people, so too does taekwondo.” He pledged to contribute to the promotion of taekwondo and Kukkiwon, stating, “As a citizen of the home of taekwondo, I will do my best to spread the beauty and spirit of this national treasure.”

Woon-do is committed to showcasing the art’s elegance and technical brilliance to the world. Since his appointment, the popular singer has leveraged his widespread recognition and influence to elevate taekwondo’s profile and the standing of Kukkiwon. As a member of Kukkiwon, I am grateful for his support.

Woon-do has a long and successful career with numerous hit songs, including “Lost 30 Years,” “Compass,” “Zero Point,” “A Depressed Heart,” “Let’s Cha-Cha Together,” “Woman, Woman, Woman,” “Samba’s Woman,” “I Only Loved You,” “Love Twist,” “Purple Postcard,” “Nui,” “Please Be My Lover,” “Chunja,” and “Is This Love?” He’s also a talented songwriter and composer, responsible for hits like “Purple Postcard,” recently revitalized by the popular trot singer Lim Young-woong.

I once shared a meal with the legendary MC Song Hae and veteran detective actor Choi Jung-rak at a local restaurant in Jongno. During our conversation, when I mentioned my fondness for “Napal Blossom Life” and “Zero Point,” Song Hae exclaimed that Seol Woon-do was “the most gentlemanly figure in the Korean music industry.” He praised Woon-do’s respect for his seniors and his loyalty to his juniors. Choi Jung-rak added that Woon-do always appeared “well-dressed, refined, and stylish” on television.

Indeed, Woon-do is known for his talent, confidence, humility, sincerity, and impeccable manners. He’s a true gentleman and a loyal friend – a complete artist who embodies both skill and character. I wish him continued health, happiness, and success.
