The escalating costs and development timelines of blockbuster video games are facing scrutiny from a former industry executive. Shawn Layden, previously President and CEO of Sony interactive entertainment, argues that increasingly lengthy and expensive game projects might potentially be unsustainable for both developers and players. In a recent interview, Layden questioned the current industry trend toward massive, multi-year game productions, suggesting a need for greater efficiency and accessibility in the market.

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden believes video games have become too big for their own good.

In a recent interview with Game Rant, Layden explained that as gamers age, they often have less time to dedicate to lengthy gaming sessions, and the sheer size of modern titles is becoming a concern, both in terms of time commitment and cost.

“Not everyone has 88 hours to spend playing Red Dead Redemption 2,” he stated in the interview. The sprawling open-world western has become a benchmark for immersive, but time-consuming, gaming experiences.

Big-budget games continue to perform well at retail.

Layden suggests a shift is needed, advocating for a return to a development cycle of two to three years per game. He believes game budgets should be in the “eight-figure” range—millions, not hundreds of millions of dollars. “I’d like to see games that offer between 20 and 25 hours of gameplay,” he added.

According to Layden, streamlining development in this way would open the door for more studios to enter the market, rather than having all industry resources tied up in a handful of massive, years-long projects. The conversation comes as the cost of AAA game development continues to climb, impacting both developers and, potentially, consumers.
