A Canadian woman was killed and at least six other people were injured in a shooting at the Teotihuacan archaeological site in Mexico, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at the UNESCO World Heritage site northeast of Mexico City, where tourists were visiting the ancient pyramids. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots near the Pyramid of the Sun, prompting panic among visitors.

Officials said the victim, a Canadian citizen, was pronounced dead at the scene. Four others were initially reported wounded, but later updates indicated the number of injured had risen to at least six, including both Mexican nationals and foreign tourists.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, treating the wounded on-site before transporting several to nearby hospitals for further care. Their conditions have not been officially disclosed.

Mexican authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the motive and identify those responsible. No arrests have been made as of yet.

Teotihuacan, one of Mexico’s most visited archaeological destinations, draws thousands of domestic and international tourists daily. The shooting has raised concerns about security at major cultural sites across the country.

The incident underscores ongoing challenges related to public safety in popular tourist areas, even as Mexico continues to promote its rich cultural heritage to global visitors.
