Trump Aims for Stronger Iran Nuclear Deal

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he is not rushing to finalize a new nuclear agreement with Iran, insisting any deal must be stronger than the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) negotiated under President Barack Obama.

Speaking to reporters, Trump emphasized that while discussions with Tehran are ongoing, he will not accept a weak compromise. “We’re working on something much better than what Obama had,” he said, adding that the goal is a deal that fully prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Iranian officials, however, have warned that U.S. Pressure and threats are hindering negotiations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani stated that Washington’s approach creates obstacles and any decision will be made only after carefully considering all aspects of the situation.

The comments approach amid broader diplomatic efforts to revive or replace the JCPOA, which the U.S. Withdrew from in 2018. Trump reiterated his position that any new agreement must include stricter inspections, longer restrictions on uranium enrichment, and measures to counter Iran’s ballistic missile program.

Analysts note that the stalemate reflects deep mistrust between the two sides, with Iran demanding sanctions relief as a precondition for talks, while the U.S. Insists on verifiable limits on nuclear activity first.

Despite the challenges, both sides have signaled openness to dialogue through intermediaries, including Oman and Qatar. Trump said he hopes to reach a deal that is “much better” than the previous one, though he offered no timeline for when such an agreement might be finalized.

The development underscores the ongoing complexity of U.S.-Iran relations and the high stakes involved in preventing nuclear proliferation in a volatile region. Any breakthrough or breakdown in talks could significantly influence regional security dynamics and global nonproliferation efforts.
