Poet Laureate Simon Armitage Writes Epic Poem for Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’ 50th Anniversary
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s critically acclaimed album, Wish You Were Here, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has penned a sprawling, punctuation-free poem titled “Dear Pink Floyd,” exploring the record’s enduring impact.
Armitage, commissioned by the band to create a new work reflecting on the album, described the experience as a chance to explore a different creative direction. “You can hear this record coming towards you from a distance. It feels like something huge and important is approaching, and it’s going to envelop you,” he stated, adding, “It’s astonishing to think that it’s half a century old.” The poem blends elements of a fan letter with a devotional text, imagining the band performing in fantastical locations like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Mariana Trench.
Released in 1975, Wish You Were Here initially received mixed reviews, with some critics finding it self-indulgent; however, it quickly achieved commercial success, reaching No. 1 on the charts and becoming a cornerstone of progressive rock. The album, featuring the iconic track “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” as a tribute to former bandmate Syd Barrett, has since been lauded as a masterpiece, earning a perfect 10 from Pitchfork. Armitage recalled listening to the album privately during his youth, as punk rock gained prominence, noting that its reputation as a “headphone record” allowed for a more personal connection. The album’s continued relevance is evidenced by the recent chart success of Pink Floyd’s 1972 live album, Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII, which reached No. 1 earlier this year.
Armitage also shared anecdotes of encountering Pink Floyd’s influence in unexpected places, including sightings of band merchandise in an Arctic rescue hut and among indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest. The poem’s release coincides with a renewed interest in Pink Floyd’s catalog, solidifying their legacy as one of the most influential bands in music history.
The poem is expected to be released alongside commemorative editions of the album later this year, offering fans a new perspective on a timeless work.
