Cruzeiro‘s pursuit of teh Copa do Brasil title ended in heartbreak Wednesday with a penalty shootout defeat to corinthians, following a 0-0 draw after extra time. The loss was further soured by a recurring injury to Colombian international Luis Sinisterra, whose limited playing time since joining the club is becoming a concern for both the Brazilian side and his national team aspirations. Sinisterra’s latest thigh strain raises questions about his availability for upcoming matches and perhaps jeopardizes Cruzeiro’s long-term plans for the talented winger. The match ultimately went to a dramatic penalty shootout, where a missed attempt sealed cruzeiro’s fate.

Cruzeiro’s Copa do Brasil hopes were dashed Wednesday after a 5-4 penalty shootout loss to Corinthians, a result compounded by yet another injury to Colombian winger Luis Sinisterra. The forward was forced off the pitch after just 30 minutes with a left thigh strain.

Sinisterra’s injury casts a shadow over Cruzeiro’s plans, as the team had hoped to see the player reach peak form in 2026. This latest setback marks a frustrating recurrence of muscle issues for the Colombian, who previously missed five matches in October due to similar problems. The club is awaiting the official medical report to determine the severity of the injury and expected recovery time.

Promising Start Cut Short

It was only the third start for Sinisterra since joining the Brazilian club this semester, and he was enjoying a strong performance before being sidelined. The winger had a clear opportunity to score earlier in the match, but his attempt following a rebound off the goalkeeper Souza sailed over the crossbar.

During his 30 minutes on the field, Sinisterra was a key presence on the left wing, linking up well with teammates and making runs into the box. However, a sudden pull in his left thigh brought his night to an abrupt end, forcing manager Jardim to make an early substitution. That change proved crucial, as substitute Arroyo went on to score both of Cruzeiro’s goals, sending the match to penalties.

Despite Arroyo’s heroics, Corinthians proved more clinical in the shootout, advancing to the Copa do Brasil final with a 5-4 victory. A missed penalty from Gabigol ultimately sealed Cruzeiro’s fate.

Sinisterra’s fitness is now a major concern as he looks to regain his place in the Colombia national team setup, particularly with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. Cruzeiro won’t be back in competitive action until January 10, providing Sinisterra with a window to recover and work his way back to full fitness. Cruzeiro had set ambitious goals for Sinisterra’s performance in the coming seasons, but his recurring injuries threaten to derail those plans.
