Newcastle Manager Howe Responds to Liverpool’s Slot Over Isak Transfer Remark

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has downplayed comments made by Liverpool’s new head coach Arne Slot, who suggested Newcastle are a “smaller club” following the transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

The exchange began after Isak sustained a groin injury during yesterday’s match between Liverpool and Newcastle at Anfield. Slot’s remarks alluded to a potential pre-existing condition, with some interpreting them as a suggestion Newcastle hadn’t fully disclosed Isak’s fitness. Howe responded with laughter, stating, “The set-up here is very good,” seemingly dismissing the implication.

Howe also addressed resurfaced comments he made regarding Isak potentially needing surgery earlier in the year, acknowledging the injury concern. “I think it’s always a dangerous game to talk about players’ medical histories,” Howe said. This back-and-forth occurs as Isak’s injury could impact both clubs’ performance in the competitive English Premier League season.

Liverpool sources have subtly indicated they believe Newcastle were aware of the groin issue prior to the transfer, though no formal complaint has been lodged. The Football Association has guidelines regarding player disclosure during transfers, and any breach could lead to investigation.

Howe stated he expects a full assessment of Isak’s injury in the coming days, and Liverpool officials have yet to comment further on the matter.
