Emergency responders were alerted to the collapse at a building belonging to a construction firm on P. O. Hviezdoslava Street in Veľké Kapušany, according to a post from Košice firefighters.

“Initial reports indicated three people were inside the building at the time of the collapse,” the fire department stated. According to tvnoviny.sk, the men were working on structural supports when the roof gave way. Police in Košice later confirmed that renovation work was underway at the site.

“One person was found in the rubble conscious and was transported to a hospital by paramedics. Preliminary medical reports indicate the injuries will require more than 42 days of treatment and recovery time,” police said in a social media update. “Unfortunately, three others were found in the debris and pronounced dead at the scene.”

Firefighters used heavy equipment to free the three victims from the wreckage, where a doctor confirmed their deaths, officials said. TV Markíza reported that one of the deceased was a recent father of twins.
