Smartwatches are increasingly proving to be more than just convenient tools for staying connected; they’re emerging as valuable health monitoring devices. New research from Amsterdam UMC, in collaboration with cardiologie Centra Nederland, demonstrates that smartwatches equipped with PPG and ECG capabilities can detect heart rhythm disturbances – specifically atrial fibrillation – four times more effectively than conventional methods. The study, involving patients over 65, highlights the potential for continuous monitoring to identify previously undetected cases and improve preventative cardiology.
Smartwatches with advanced health-tracking capabilities are significantly improving the detection of irregular heart rhythms. A study from Amsterdam UMC in collaboration with Cardiologie Centra Nederland found that smartwatches identified heart rhythm disturbances four times more often than traditional monitoring methods.
Continuous Monitoring Enhances Detection
The research involved 437 patients over the age of 65 who were at high risk for heart rhythm disorders. Half of the participants wore an Apple Watch for 12 hours a day, utilizing photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) features to monitor their heart rhythm. The remaining patients underwent conventional monitoring using adhesive electrodes on their chest connected to a portable ECG device, typically limited to two weeks of recording.
After six months, the smartwatch group had 21 diagnoses of atrial fibrillation, compared to just five cases in the traditional monitoring group. Notably, 12 of the cases detected by the smartwatch were asymptomatic, highlighting the benefit of continuous monitoring for identifying subtle arrhythmias. In contrast, all patients diagnosed using traditional methods experienced noticeable symptoms.
Benefits of Smartwatch Screening for Atrial Fibrillation
Researchers emphasized the potential of smartwatches with combined PPG and ECG functionality for effective atrial fibrillation screening in clinical practice. They pointed out that many individuals are unaware they have underlying atrial fibrillation due to its often asymptomatic nature, making conventional detection challenging. Continuous smartwatch monitoring overcomes this limitation by enabling long-term observation and timely identification of arrhythmias.
The increasing ability to detect previously undiagnosed heart conditions through wearable technology represents a significant step forward in preventative cardiology. Follow Newsmonkey also on Google News
