Caitlin Clark Draws Large Crowds at LPGA Pro-Am, Aims to Improve Golf Game
BELLEAIR, Fla. — Basketball star Caitlin Clark returned to the golf course today at the Pelican Golf Club for The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge pro-am, attracting hundreds of fans and generating significant buzz for the LPGA.
Clark, who was limited to 13 games this year due to injuries, acknowledged some rust in her game, slicing several tee shots right of the fairway. “I’m slicing it off the tee, but that was honestly probably my best drive of the day so I’m happy with it,” she said, adding, “I just need to slow down.” After seeking advice from Nelly Korda’s coach, Jamie Mulligan, she hit her best drive of the day on the 10th hole, followed by a 35-foot birdie putt. This event highlights the LPGA’s efforts to broaden its appeal beyond traditional golf audiences.
World No. 2 Nelly Korda, who played alongside Clark, described the atmosphere as “something out of a book almost.” Clark’s Indiana Fever teammate, Sophie Cunningham, noted Clark’s ability to “elevate everyone who’s around her.” Tournament organizers are hoping to capitalize on the increased attention brought by high-profile athletes like Clark and Kai Trump, the granddaughter of former President Donald Trump. The growing interest in women’s sports, as seen in increased viewership and merchandise sales, is contributing to this momentum, according to Clark.
LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler was present to witness Clark’s return, and Annika Sorenstam, the tournament host, extended a standing invitation for Clark to participate in future pro-ams. “We love having you here, and I hope you feel like you can come back any time,” Sorenstam said. Clark jokingly admitted she “need[s] some lessons” after her final approach shot landed in the pond on the 18th hole.
