Sony Pictures is expanding its cinematic portfolio of gaming adaptations with the announcement of an R-rated animated feature film based on the hit PlayStation title Bloodborne. The project was officially unveiled during Sony’s CinemaCon presentation on Monday, April 13, 2026.
The film is being co-produced by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, with Lyrical Media—the parent company of Lyrical Animation—co-financing the venture alongside Sony Pictures. In a move that bridges the gap between core gaming communities and mainstream production, prominent content creator and longtime fan Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin has also joined the project as a producer.
During the presentation, Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, emphasized that the adaptation will remain “very true” to the dark and violent essence of the original game. This commitment to the source material suggests a strategy of leveraging specialized animation to capture the complex atmospheric horror that defines the franchise, a move that highlights the industry’s shift toward high-fidelity, adult-oriented gaming adaptations.
Originally developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2015, Bloodborne is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time. The story follows a lone traveler through a haunting, gothic city overrun by terrifying creatures and twisted mobs. The game’s reputation for extreme difficulty and intricate, layered lore has maintained a devoted global fan base for over a decade, making it a prime candidate for a big-screen adaptation.
The Bloodborne project is part of a broader, ambitious push by Sony to translate its gaming intellectual property into film. The studio’s current slate includes an adaptation of Helldivers, which will be directed by Justin Lin, as well as a film based on The Legend of Zelda. The Zelda project is being produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and directed by Wes Ball, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason cast as Link and Princess Zelda, respectively.
While the announcement has generated significant buzz among fans, Sony is keeping specific production details closely guarded. As of April 14, 2026, the studio has not disclosed the film’s plot, casting details, or an official release date.
