PlayStation’s PS2 25th Anniversary Tribute Draws Fan Criticism

Sony’s celebration of the PlayStation 2’s 25th anniversary in North America yesterday sparked backlash from fans who criticized the limited selection of classic titles highlighted in the company’s promotional material.

The official PlayStation social media account posted a trailer showcasing games available through the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog, including Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Mister Mosquito, Dark Cloud, Siren, and Sly Cooper. While these are beloved titles, many prominent PS2 games were notably absent from the showcase, including God of War, Ratchet & Clank, ICO, and Twisted Metal Black. This omission is particularly pointed as the PS2 remains one of the best-selling consoles of all time, shaping the gaming landscape for a generation.

Sony has announced that SoulCalibur 3 and Tomb Raider Anniversary will be added to the PlayStation Plus Premium service in the coming months. The company’s continued investment in retro gaming through emulation and the Classics Catalog is seen as a positive step, but fans have expressed frustration with the slow pace of new releases. The limited availability of PS2 classics highlights the ongoing challenges of game preservation and the complexities of licensing and porting older titles to modern platforms. Sony has not yet responded to the criticism, but is expected to continue adding titles to the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog. The legendary PS2 celebrated its 25th anniversary in North America over the weekend, and Sony’s social media tribute bordered on insulting.

The company took the opportunity to promote its PS Plus Premium retro games, which makes sense, until you realise it’s missing many of the system’s most memorable releases.

The trailer focuses on the likes of Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Mister Mosquito, Dark Cloud, Siren, and Sly Cooper. All great games!

But as fans have pointed out in the replies, there are so many incredible PS2 games missing from the selection, including God of War, Ratchet & Clank, ICO, and Twisted Metal Black to name just a few.

To be fair, SoulCalibur 3 and Tomb Raider Anniversary have been announced for the service, and are due out in the coming months.

We also think it’s positive Sony’s stuck with this retro initiative, and continued to iterate on its emulator and bring more classic games to its contemporary consoles.

But we don’t think we’re being greedy to ask for more.

The rollout of these retro releases has been glacially paced, and there’s still so much the company could make readily available on the PS Store.

Here’s hoping it’s not ignoring the criticism and begins to expedite the addition of these classic games.
