April 22, 2026 — Southern Taiwan is bracing for a sharp temperature spike before a major weather shift brings widespread rain and thunderstorms across the island.
According to the Central Weather Administration, southerly winds are driving temperatures upward, with daytime highs expected to reach 29 to 32 degrees Celsius across most of Taiwan on Wednesday. In localized areas, particularly in southern mountainous regions, temperatures could exceed 36 degrees Celsius.
The agency warned that UV intensity will reach excessive to dangerous levels around midday, urging the public to strengthen sun protection measures. Offshore islands will see varying conditions: Penghu will be partly cloudy with temperatures between 24 and 29 degrees; Kinmen and Matsu will experience intermittent showers, with highs of 22 to 28 degrees and 18 to 25 degrees respectively.
Air quality in eastern Taiwan remains at solid levels, while the rest of the island is reported at ordinary levels. The administration also issued a land strong wind advisory, noting that eastern winds may bring average wind speeds of level 6 or higher, or gusts reaching level 8 or above, in parts of northern New Taipei City, the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung, and Lienchiang County.
Starting Thursday, a frontal system is expected to move through Taiwan, bringing increased moisture and a higher chance of rain. The Central Weather Administration said that from Wednesday night into Thursday, the front will initiate affecting the island, leading to more widespread rainfall by Thursday and Friday.
In particular, central and northern Taiwan, along with eastern regions and mountainous areas, are likely to see noticeable rain, with the potential for heavy downpours and strong gusts if frontal convection intensifies. The rainfall focus is expected to shift to southern and central Taiwan by Friday, accompanied by thunderstorms and localized heavy rain.
By Saturday, the influence of the northeastern monsoon and an eastward-moving south China rain band will bring cooler conditions to western Taiwan, with scattered thunderstorms and possible heavier rainfall in some areas. Rainfall is expected to gradually ease after nightfall.
Looking ahead to Sunday and Monday, the northeastern monsoon will weaken, temperatures will rise, and moisture will decrease. Most of Taiwan is forecast to be partly cloudy to sunny, except for brief afternoon showers in eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula, and isolated mountain showers in central and southern regions.
On Tuesday, eastern Taiwan may see isolated afternoon showers, while the rest of the island remains partly cloudy to sunny.
